Great Serum Race: Blazing the Iditarod Trail
In the winter of 1925, a deadly outbreak of diphtheria hit Nome, Alaska. Officials immediately quarantined the town, but the only way to save the community was with antitoxin serum. Unfortunately, the nearest supply was located in Anchorage, across more than 1,000 miles of snowbound wilderness.
Twenty teams braved subzero temperatures and blizzard conditions to run more than 600 miles in six days in a desperate relay race that saved lives and gained national attention. Today, the effects of these courageous mushers and dogs are commemorated every March by the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
Target age group 7-12
