The "both" in the series title refers to an adult and a child. A more sophisticated, smaller typeface for adults appears on the left, while the right side features larger type and only one or two simple sentences per page. Any difficult words on the child's page are introduced first, in bold, on the left. Both texts explain the responsibilities of pet ownership in terms that young children will understand. The large, full-color photographs feature both popular and unusual animals.
