In 1936, pioneering environmentalist Rachel Carson began work with the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries and soon afterward published her first book, UNDER THE SEA WIND. Her 1962 bestseller, SILENT SPRING, sent shock waves throughout the country and warned of the dangers of DDT and other pesticides.
